SINGAPORE: The barbed wire strands over the tall fence next to the train tracks in Kallang have been repaired and reinforced after a 31-year-old man was killed last week when he was hit by a train.
In a Facebook post on Wednesday (March 3), SMRT said the barbed wire at that location “was found compressed.” It has since been repaired and reinforced with concertina wire, the transport operator added.
As a precautionary measure, SMRT and the Land Transportation Authority (LTA) jointly inspected the fences at other tunnel portals and confirmed that the fence specifications are “in good condition,” the message added.
“Various measures have been implemented to secure the facilities at MRT stations. Physical barriers such as metal railings and 3 m high fences are installed to keep intruders off the tracks. CCTVs installed with video analytics and intrusion detection systems are also deployed in critical facilities, ”said SMRT.

The 31-year-old man died after being hit by a train near the Kallang MRT station on February 25.
A train captain reported hitting an object near the station around 9 pm Then a station manager was dispatched to the track and found a motionless man about 150 meters from the Kallang MRT station.
The incident occurred on the East-West Line to Pasir Ris, and train services between Bugis and Aljunied stations were suspended. The Lavender and Kallang MRT stations were also closed.
SMRT said Wednesday that staff members on duty that night have had time off to rest and have access to specialized help.
“They are doing well. Care team officers will continue to contact them for support. In the meantime, we are assisting the authorities in the investigations, “added SMRT.
Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung said on February 26 that SMRT is working closely with the police in investigations into the man’s death.
