SINGAPORE – Within half an hour of leaving his home with a knife, a man cut the arm of a runner, threatened a cyclist, then entered a mosque and disrupted a packed religious class.

Before leaving his home earlier this year, Fadhil Yusop, 35, had asked his wife to stay home. He then cycled to Masjid Al-Mawaddah Mosque at 151 Compassvale Bow when he committed a series of offenses.

Later, the gravedigger told police officials that he heard voices telling him to go to the mosque to tell the government to “switch to Islam,” according to court documents.

Fadhil was jailed for nine months and two weeks on Monday (May 11) after pleading guilty to one count of criminal intimidation, causing harm with a weapon, causing harm to a police officer, and intentionally causing alarm. Two similar crimes were taken into consideration for his sentence.

Passers-by attacked

At approximately 8 p.m. On January 19, Fadhil left his home with a kitchen knife kept in a leather sheath after signaling to his wife not to leave the house.

While cycling to the Masjid Al-Mawaddah mosque, he encountered a 24-year-old runner. He approached the jogger around 8.05 p.m., holding the unsheathed knife.

The runner, who was heading in the direction of Fadhil, decided to give Fadhil ample room and ran towards the main road.

However, Fadhil caught up to the runner and cut off his right forearm, causing a 20 cm laceration. The runner ran away. He later received five stitches from a clinic where he sought medical attention.

Minutes later, Fadhil met a cyclist on his way to the Institute of Mental Health (IMH) to work.

The 37-year-old IMH health assistant saw Fadhil unsheathe his knife and get off his bike. Despite the gestures of the healthcare assistant, Fadhil pointed the knife at him, prompting the rider to push the bike toward Fadhil and flee on foot.

Fadhil chased after him with his knife. When he saw the health assistant approach a passerby for help, Fadhil went to the mosque.

Fadhil arrived at the Masjid Al-Mawaddah mosque at approximately 8:20 p.m. and entered his prayer room. The religious officer of the mosque Muhammad Mukhtar Habib Mohamed was holding a religious class with about 100 attendees at the time.

When Fadhil entered the room with the knife in his hand, he shouted an Arab greeting for “Peace be with you” and warned Mukhtar not to teach any more. The aides managed to disarm Fadhil and a keeper of the mosque called the police.

When police officers attempted to put Fadhil under arrest for carrying a knife in public, he violently fought and kicked an officer’s knee.

Consumed cough suppressants

Addressing the court, Fadhil said he had “overconsumed” the cough suppressants, which he took recreationally.

The father said that he was the sole breadwinner in the family supporting three children and a pregnant Indonesian wife and asked for mercy.

According to an IMH evaluation, Fadhil has a substance use disorder that involves the abuse of cough suppressants.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Gabriel Lim noted that this was not a mitigating factor in the case, since Fadhil’s substance abuse was self-induced.

Nor did the report highlight a strong causal link between Fadhil’s disorder and the crimes he committed. Fadhil was still in control of his actions, the DPP noted.

District Judge Marvin Bay told Fadhil that his actions amounted to a “wave of criminal acts.”

“I accept that, according to the psychiatrist’s report, he had taken a large number of pills containing dextromethorphan, which had led to his disinhibition,” the judge said.
