Apple released beta iPhone software on Wednesday that makes it easy to unlock your iPhone without using Face ID and wearing a mask.

Right now, if you wear a mask, you need to lift it to unlock an iPhone with Face ID. Otherwise, there is a small but annoying delay between when the phone realizes that it cannot see your face and when it presents the screen to enter an access code. You can disable Face ID, but you don’t get comfort when you’re at home and you don’t wear a mask.

In the new iOS 3.5 beta 3 code, which was released to developers for testing on Wednesday, Apple simplifies the unlock process for people wearing skins by bringing the passcode field to the main screen. All you need to do is swipe up if you wear a mask, and it will skip the face ID screen and enter a code.

Here’s a look:

That means you will be able to unlock your phone more easily while doing things like mobile payments at a cashier counter instead of searching for your mask or waiting for a password screen to appear. Since it is still a beta version, it may take a few more weeks for a final version to be released with the feature enabled.

The new beta version also includes the first release of new Apple software that will make it easier to create apps to notify people if they have been around someone with Covid-19.
