Anxiety attack, no hot water: M Social Hotel guests cry badly after a power outage interrupts their vacation, Singapore News

It was supposed to be a lovely stay at M Social Singapore to mark its 10th anniversary, but Jeffrey Wong and his wife were among the many who had their celebrations interrupted after the power went out at their hotel.

A scheduled power outage during the early morning of December 19 left some guests stranded and panicking, while others reportedly resorted to gathering outside the hotel due to poor ventilation in their rooms.

In a post uploaded to Facebook last Friday (December 18), Wong complained that he was only informed of the hotel’s scheduled power outage a couple of hours after checking in.

In an update later that night, Wong said he and his wife decided to go downstairs because they couldn’t handle the “pressure in a small room without electricity.”

As a result of the power outage, none of the elevators were in service, so he and his wife tried to climb the stairs, he said. However, the exit leading to the stairs was closed, leaving them stranded. As calls to the hotel’s deputy director and security personnel reportedly went unanswered, Wong’s wife began to suffer from an anxiety attack.

According to Wong, they “made a fuss” for about half an hour before security personnel came to their aid and escorted them out of the building.

Officers from the Singapore Civil Defense Force were also called in to attend to Wong’s wife.

In the videos attached to his post, both the elevators and stair exits were shown to be unresponsive. Wong also shared photos that showed a small crowd of guests standing outside the hotel in their nightwear, some even in their robes.

Other unhappy guests

Speaking with AsiaOne, another guest, who wanted to be known only as Ms. Ng, said that she did not receive any prior notice of the power outage even though she had booked her stay directly through the M Social Singapore website.

When he checked in shortly after noon on December 18, he noticed a bystander standing at the reception, roughly the size of a postcard, indicating that there would be a scheduled power outage, albeit only for a period of five to 10 minutes.

“The hotel staff who checked me in did not mention it verbally either,” he added.

According to Ng, it was only around 7 p.m. that night that a sheet of paper was slid under his door with a timeline of the expected power outages.
