Angry Jurgen Klopp regrets Liverpool’s’ very frustrating ‘display in Southampton defeat and admits he is’ concerned’ after reigning champions’ winless streak extended to three games
An ‘angry’ Jurgen Klopp admitted that he is concerned about Liverpool’s problem after they were beaten by Southampton on Monday night.
Klopp accused his players of wasting the game after Danny Ings ‘surprising goal in the second minute extended the champions’ winless streak to three games.
The Saints are now four points behind league leaders Liverpool, who could be overtaken by Manchester United before they meet at Anfield on Sunday week.
Jurgen Klopp criticized Liverpool’s performance in their 1-0 loss to Southampton
Southampton manager Ralph Hasenhuttl fell to his knees, tears in his eyes, after a ‘perfect night’ that ended with a first win over Liverpool in nearly four years.
Klopp said: ‘I know they’re great guys and players, but they weren’t good tonight.
‘When I think they should do better, I get mad. Not for long, but I do. We don’t have to make it bigger, but it’s big … (it’s) all our fault. It’s my fault, but the boys have had a hand too.
He added: “It’s very frustrating because it’s so unnecessary … we gave the game away in the first few minutes and after that we weren’t calm enough to create the opportunities to turn it around.”
The reigning champions have not won any of their last three Premier League matches
Liverpool have now failed to score in their last two games. On Monday night, they had to wait until minute 75 for a first shot on goal; not since December 2015 had they wasted so much in a Premier League game.
“We are concerned about that,” Klopp admitted. “We know the situation, we are not stupid and we have to show a 100 percent reaction.”
Klopp was also frustrated by the fact that the referees did not award his team two penalties in the second half.
“What Andre Marriner did with Sadio Mane today, I’m not sure if it’s okay to be honest,” he said.
Danny Ings scored the only goal of the game thanks to a delicious chip in the second minute
“ I heard that Manchester United had more penalties in two years than (we) had in five and a half years. I have no idea if it’s my fault and I don’t know how it can happen, but that’s no excuse for acting. ‘
Hasenhuttl, by contrast, was still excited at his post-match press conference.
“It’s the perfect night,” he said. “It’s the first time I’ve scored points against Jurgen, an amazing coach, a fantastic team … to do a job like this today, I couldn’t be more proud of the work the guys did.”
Ings said, “It’s really special … getting the result we did was huge.” On his brilliant shot, the forward added: ‘Some would say it was a cross, I say it was a shot!’
