All students must use the token or TraceTogether app in schools starting December 1: MOE

SINGAPORE: All students will be required to use the TraceTogether app or token for SafeEntry in schools starting December 1, in accordance with the new Ministry of Education (MOE) guidelines.

December will be a grace period in which scanning of NRICs or student passes will be allowed if those entering do not have the token or the application, the ministry said.

“While students can download the TT (TraceTogether) app, they may not have access to their cell phones all the time during classes or outdoor activities. As such, students are encouraged to bring the TT Token to school to facilitate contact tracing, ”the guidelines stated.

Students will not be denied entry to schools if they do not have the TraceTogether app, or if they have lost or forgotten to bring the token, the ministry said.

Instead, they may not be able to participate in extracurricular activities such as outside co-curricular activities or learning trips in places where SafeEntry only from TraceTogether is required.

Students with special education needs can also register with the token or the app. When students are at school, staff members will assist students who may face challenges accessing the TraceTogether app or who did not bring their token to school, in accordance with the guidelines.

Similarly, students without the token or app will not be denied entry to schools.

“However, parents of students with special educational needs (SEN) are encouraged to obtain and use the TT Token for their child for occasional school activities that require it and for private use,” indicated the guidelines of the Ministry of Education.

TraceTogether exclusive SafeEntry will be phased out in popular Singapore locations by the end of the year, the Smart Nation and Digital Government Office (SNDGO) announced on October 20.

This means that it will be mandatory to use the TraceTogether app or the SafeEntry registration token in certain places, including those that conduct activities with large groups of people.

The TraceTogether program relies on proximity data to provide an initial list of close contacts of COVID-19 cases.

Together with SafeEntry and associated digital systems, the program would allow contact tracing teams to reduce the time required to identify and quarantine a close contact from four days to less than two days on average.

The distribution of TraceTogether tokens in community centers was temporarily suspended on October 27, after long lines formed at some collection points. Harvesting began again on October 29, one district at a time to “better meet demand” and avoid long lines at some community centers.

“More constituency CCs will be progressively opened for token collection from October to December. By the second half of December, all CCs will be opened for collection, including the initial 38 CCs,” SNDGO said.

Residents can refer to the TokenGoWhere website to find the designated collection location and the complete collection schedule.
