SINGAPORE – The 191 units at Geylang Lorong 3 have been vacated and ownership of the land leased for 60 years has returned to the state, the Singapore Land Authority (SLA) said on Friday (January 1).
In June 2017, the statutory board announced that the land occupied by the 191 deck units would return to the state when the leases expired on Thursday.
This is the first time that an independent residential lot in Singapore reaches the end of its lease.
The land is slated for a new public housing development as part of a plan to rejuvenate Kallang, SLA said.
Of the 191 units, 40 were owner-occupied. The land authority said the government had assisted the owners for the past three years with their relocation, and an SLA officer was assigned to each household to assist them.
He also worked with the Housing and Development Board (HDB) to help owner-occupiers find alternative housing.
All the owners have found alternative housing, some move in with relatives or buy new apartments.
This included the remaining five homeowners who were considering housing options on December 3.
For the 135 units used for the accommodation of foreign workers, SLA and the Ministry of Labor worked with employers to relocate all workers.
On the 16 units used for religious purposes, SLA said it has worked with the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, as well as relevant religious organizations to help the occupants.
They were also advised by SLA to seek help from relevant member organizations of the National Steering Committee on Racial and Religious Harmony.
“SLA will accumulate and clear the site in preparation for redevelopment,” the statutory board added.
The 70-year-old private leased houses at Jalan Chempaka Kuning and Jalan Chempaka Puteh, near the Tanah Merah MRT station, are the next to expire in 2034.
