If you don’t already know, Disney’s live-action remake ‘Mulan’ is showing on the big screen now!

But when it comes to the Chinese film actor Jet Li, who plays the emperor in the film, it turns out that he had originally turned down the role due to the script and the pay.

However, that changed after his 15-year-old daughter Jada asked him to take on the role, the 57-year-old revealed in an email interview with Shin Min Daily News.

She said her youngest daughter, Jada, asked her three questions when she learned of her decision.

“He asked me if I am proud to promote Chinese culture to the world. I did not disagree, I like to share Chinese culture with the world, ”said the father of four.

Then, Jada suddenly asked Li if he was lacking money, and he denied it. Apparently, Jada believed that Li refused to take on the role because he thought he wasn’t paying enough.

Lastly, he questioned whether Disney was spending a lot of money making Chinese stories. Jada asked, “The main characters are all Chinese. Are you not promoting Chinese culture? “

Li said his question “surprised” him and that he did not know how to answer it.

However, Jada didn’t stop there as she continued on, asking Li to take on the role for her. Jada’s older sister, Jane, also shared her feelings.

“This is how I decided to make this movie,” said Li, who was encouraged by his daughters, who loved the original 1998 animated film.

This led the star, who is said to be picky about his film roles, to take on the role of emperor once again.

He said, “When I think of ancient China or the ancient world, I wonder why people want to become king. For my personal taste, I like freedom ”.

Other than that, the heavy imperial robe and having to pronounce his lines in English were the challenges Li said he faced during filming.

Plus, it’s a great father-daughter movie to get involved in, it is said that more time is spent building the core relationship between Mulan and her father (Tzi Ma), despite her little screen time in the original.

And most of all, the film also sends a message of empowerment to young women.

Previously, Mulan was scheduled to be released in Singapore on August 20, but only hit theaters starting September 4 due to delays from the pandemic.

It is also available on Disney + and will be released directly to the streaming platform.
