After falling into a well outside a cafeteria in Block 732 Yishun Avenue 5 on Sunday morning (December 27), a 57-year-old Yishun resident has said he plans to take legal action against the city hall, according to a Report from today.

The incident occurred when he stepped on an unstable metal deck, revealing a grease trap about a meter deep, the victim, Colin Pereira, told the online newspaper.

Grease traps intercept oil and grease from cafeteria sewage before it reaches the sewers, and are supposed to be maintained by the cafeteria, according to city hall.

Bystanders who witnessed the incident reportedly stepped forward to help by moving chairs around the grease trap.

Pereira said he injured his back muscle and suffered cuts and bruises on his right knee from the fall.

Pereira had called the police after the incident happened. He was treated at the scene and his knee was sold after paramedics arrived. Initially refusing to be taken to the hospital, he later visited Mount Elizabeth Hospital for treatment when the pain worsened.

Pereira, who is a part-time deliveryman, said his medical bill was about $ 600 because he had to get an X-ray.

In response to Today’s questions, Nee Soon City Council spokeswoman Pauline Kwa said the city immediately dispatched a group of people to cordon off the grease trap after being notified of the incident.

“The city council is in contact with the cafeteria to expedite the repair work and alerted the Housing and Development Board of the incident,” he said.

Kwa also pointed out that the city council is in contact with Pereira and knows that the cafeteria is also reaching out to him.

“In view of public safety, the city council will send a letter to all cafeterias in the city of Nee Soon, to remind them to carry out regular checks and maintain the grease trap covers,” he said.

In addition, Pereira said that he reported this incident to his deputy, associate professor Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim, who told him that the city council would follow up on the matter.

However, Pereira remains unhappy with current security procedures and has told Today that he plans to take legal action against the city council.

“This time it was me, but my biggest concern is what would happen if a child had fallen,” he said.
