Uber closes Eats operations in eight smaller markets

LONDON: Uber said on Monday it would shut down its Uber Eats operations in eight markets because they did not offer a clear path to becoming the number one or number two online food delivery operator, its stated goal for its Eats business.

“We have made the decision to suspend Uber Eats in the Czech Republic, Egypt, Honduras, Romania, Saudi Arabia, Ukraine and Uruguay, and to close the Eats app and Careem transition operations in the UAE,” said an Uber spokesperson.

“This continues our strategy of focusing our energy and resources on our major Eats markets worldwide.”

Uber said its core travel business was not affected in all markets.

Operations will cease before June 4 in the markets, other than the UAE, where they will transition to Careem, its wholly owned subsidiary that operates primarily in the Middle East. He said that about 50 full-time roles would be affected.

Uber said discontinued and transferred markets accounted for 1 percent of Eats ‘gross reserves and 4 percent of Eats’ adjusted central profit losses in the first quarter of 2020.
