The next release of the Xbox Series X (and, by extension, its direct competitor, the PlayStation 5) will undoubtedly continue to be a monumental event later this year, despite all that is happening on the current global landscape.
In a recent interview with CNBC (via DualShockers), Xbox boss Phil Spencer gave some good and bad news for potential gamers of Microsoft’s upcoming flagship console. First, he said the Xbox Series X is “online” to launch at Holiday 2020, despite concerns that production could be delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
However, Spencer also cast some doubt on the games themselves that can be released at the same time as the console launch. As gaming studios are still recovering from the effects of the global outbreak, he firmly stated that Microsoft will not “push” [games out] when things just aren’t ready. “
“I would say the biggest unknown is probably the production of the game,” Spencer said. “Game production is a large-scale entertainment activity right now, you have hundreds of people coming together, creating assets, working through creativity.”
Although not much is known about the various first-party Xbox Series X games, such as Halo Infinite and The Senua saga: Hellblade II and their respective states, it may not be too far to assume that developers might be facing production issues similar to those of PlayStation persuasion, with the likes of Ghost of tsushima and The last of us, part II having to delay the launch of their games as a result of the coronavirus.

Despite all of this, there are still some merits to buying an Xbox Series X in case the games are delayed, as it is inherently backward compatible, though it remains to be seen exactly how it improves the hardware of Xbox One with backwards compatible titles.
