The glowing dolphin phenomenon is closer to shore than ever before in Southern California’s own backyard. Now we have some coastal dolphins lighting up the night sea!
Watch this video from the photographer Patrick CoyneWhich, like last time, tracked down more flapping swimmers near Newport Beach, which glowed blue fluorescently underwater in the dead of night … and very close to land, too.
In the video, he makes a distinction between these dolphins, which are bottlenose dolphins (also known as shore dolphins), and dolphins he caught the camera About a week ago, they are just common dolphins, and they go further in the water than these little ones.
As we have explained … the way dolphins can shine as they do here is attributed to bioluminescence. Basically the phytoplankton in the water has been soaked in this, and they make the surrounding water glow in the dark. That also includes anything that swims in the ocean, obviously.

Patrick makes a note in the clip that the coastal dolphins appear to be using their new power to their advantage, and you can imagine the same thing. They are smart animals, so if they can see better with this, they will probably go to town with him on their journey.
