Jakarta. Tokopedia, one of Indonesia’s largest e-commerce companies, is investigating a breach of more than 15 million of its customer accounts, a company representative said in a statement on Saturday.

“We found attempts to steal data from Tokopedia users, but Tokopedia made sure that important user information such as passwords remains protected,” Nuraini Razak, vice president of corporate communications for Tokopedia, said in the statement.

“Currently, we are continuing to investigate, and there is no further information that we can transmit,” he said.

“We always try to maintain the confidentiality of user data because Tokopedia’s business is a trusted business. The security of user data is Tokopedia’s top priority,” said Nuraini.

A hacker leaked 15 million Tokopedia user accounts after a feat in March, according to a report by ZDNet, an American technology news website.

The data contained emails, hash passwords, and usernames, but did not contain a critical feature that would allow the hacker to crack the hash password immediately, according to the report.

That should give committed Tokopedia users time to change their password. Tokopedia’s Nuraini also encouraged users to take the necessary precautions.

“Although user passwords and other crucial information are still protected behind encryption, we encourage Tokopedia users to continue to change their account passwords regularly for security and convenience,” said Nuraini.

Since its inception in 2009, Tokopedia has raised a total of $ 2.9 billion in funds with sponsors to include Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba and Japanese multinational holding company Softbank.

Tokopedia has more than 7 million merchants on its platform, which serves more than 90 million visitors each month, according to the company’s recent statement.
