Liverpool will not sign Timo Werner this summer after two sources claimed that the Reds had walked away from the £ 52 million deal.
The RB Leipzig forward has been strongly linked with a move to Anfield in recent months., where he would join his compatriot Jurgen Klopp as his manager.
With 27 goals in 36 appearances across all competitions, Werner is already enjoying the most prolific season of his career to date, even though it is far from complete.
And reports have suggested that Liverpool wants to add him to his famous line of attack, with rumors of a £ 52 million release clause suggesting it would be an addition to the bargain.
Werner himself has done little to hide his admiration for Liverpool and Klopp., launching a series of interviews about his future and dropping more than one or two clues about a transfer to Merseyside.
And the striker has spoken again about his future, this time counting Bild Friday night: “Bayern is a great club, we don’t need to talk about it, and Hansi Flick has shown this season that he is a very good head coach.”
“But if a move became a problem at some point, I would be more tempted by a move abroad than a move to Bayern.
“It’s just that the challenge of another league would appeal to me a little more than a move within the Bundesliga.
“Of course, it is also important that there is mutual respect as much as possible.
“That’s why I chose RB Leipzig at the time, and that’s why I would choose the club to [the] next step as one where I would have that feeling. “
However, one of the longest-running transfer sagas of the year appears to have an unexpected twist with Liverpool now reported by Daily mirror having walked away from an agreement to sign Werner.
They claim that the Liverpool board has decided not to spend much this summer and instead will experience a period of reduced transfer activity amid the global financial crisis that has affected the game.
As such, the Reds are reportedly planning a more disciplined approach to the transfer window and will only sign players to fill the necessary gaps in their squad.
And that stance in Liverpool has been endorsed by Sky Sports journalist Vinny O’Connor, when he claimed Liverpool you will not be signing.
He said, “Do I expect Liverpool to happen this summer?
“At the moment, I’m not expecting much transfer activity. Certainly in terms of revenue once again.
“I was actually told that Liverpool will not sign anyone in the next window.
“If you had asked me in January, I would have been pretty sure that one or two signings would come to immediately reinforce the first team team.”
“Since then, things have obviously changed.
“There is a different financial climate due to the impact of the coronavirus and that has naturally impacted potential business in the transfer market as well.”
Edwards opposed to Werner’s stance
Although both sources claim that Liverpool will not sign Werner, the Mirror They also report that sports director Michael Edwards is opposed to their planned frugality and believes they should invest to ensure they are one step ahead of their rivals.
