Tuchel surprised and puzzled by the humility at Chelsea’s home against West Brom

Thomas Tuchel said Chelsea were “rusty” but did not see defeat coming as West Brom claimed their first victory at Stamford Bridge since 1978.

It was the first time Tuchel tasted defeat while in charge of the Blues and lamented their poor defense when they were beaten 5-2 by relegation-threatened Baggies.

Matheus Pereira’s fine double led to a surprising victory for West Brom on Saturday. Thiago Silva was sent off for two yellow cards after just 29 minutes, when Tuchel started undefeated in 14 games at the helm of Chelsea and reached a surprising finish.

Brazilian striker Pereira scored both of his goals in first-class fashion before Callum Robinson’s double and a clever shot from Mbaye Diagne sealed West Brom’s first win in four league games, fighting relegation.

Christian Pulisic and Mason Mount hit the net for Chelsea, but the Blues tasted defeat for the first time since January 19.

West Brom’s sweeping victory turned out to be their first victory at Stamford Bridge since 1978.

Tuchel predicted before kick-off that veteran center-back Silva would not last the course in his first game since Feb. 4 due to a thigh injury.

But the German Blues boss could never have predicted the shape of Silva’s premature departure, a first red card since 2013.

Tuchel said BBC Sport: “It’s two games, 11 against 11 and then 11 against 10. There is no need to concede five goals when you have our quality, that’s for sure, but we’re all on it. Myself included.

“We could not adapt to the situation which is a surprise since we were carrying. Normally we are confident enough to defend, but we were careless and we kept making big mistakes. We were punished harshly and it is difficult to digest.

“I didn’t see the red card, I saw the two big mistakes in our own half before the yellow cards. That’s not typical of us, we were rusty. We made easy mistakes and we were punished. It was totally our fault.

Tuchel: I didn’t see it coming

“I didn’t see that second half coming. We tried to give a little security with a three back, but we were never in a flow. We had some chances but we didn’t defend well ”.

The German chief said later BT sport he did not see defeat coming.

“There wasn’t that much until the red card came. After that, we couldn’t cope with the situation. I don’t know why, ”added Tuchel.

“We gave away two very easy goals. What could have gone wrong went wrong after the red card. We have to accept the great loss. We made big mistakes before the two yellow cards. There were too many easy turnovers. It was impossible for us to accept the situation.

“Every shot was a goal from them. Clearly, today was not our day. We will get the correct answer. First of all, it is important that we say so. I didn’t see it coming, now we have to assume our responsibilities, myself included, and shake ourselves off. “
