12 people investigated for disobeying COVID-19 rules after singing and drinking at Joo Chiat’s store

SINGAPORE: Seven men and five women are being investigated for alleged breach of COVID-19 safe distancing measures, police said in a press release on Tuesday (March 30).

The 12 people, aged between 20 and 44, were found during a police raid allegedly consuming alcohol, singing karaoke and socializing in a store along Joo Chiat Road on March 26.

“The unit did not have any public entertainment license or liquor license,” police said, adding that the karaoke equipment found in the unit was seized as a display of cases.

A 27-year-old man, believed to be the operator of the unit, will be investigated for offenses under the Public Entertainment Act and the Alcoholic Beverage Control Act.

If found guilty of the separate offenses of providing public entertainment and supplying liquor without a valid license, the man can be fined up to S $ 20,000 for each offense.

“Citizens are advised to take the prevailing safe distancing measures seriously,” police said.

Anyone found guilty of violating COVID-19 safe distancing measures can be jailed for up to six months or fined up to S $ 10,000, or both.

Police said they would continue to crack down on illegal activities.

“Those found to be involved in illegal activities, or violating safe distancing measures, will be treated harshly in accordance with the law,” they said.
