He got a job here two years ago as an aeronautical technician.

Every day German Gonzales called his wife at their home in the Philippines.

On Thursday night, he did the same, telling her that he looked forward to coming home and seeing her and her two young children “after the pandemic is over.”

It was the last time that husband and wife spoke to each other. The 31-year-old cyclist died in a traffic accident on Friday after being trapped under a bus at the junction of Loyang Avenue and Pasir Ris Drive 1.

A 63-year-old bus driver with bus operator SBS Transit was arrested for reckless driving resulting in death, and police are investigating the accident.

SHOCKED

Speaking to the Chinese-language daily Lianhe Wanbao from the Philippines after the accident, his wife, Ms. Shiela Marie, 29, said: “I didn’t think her life would end like this.

“My heart hurts a lot and I don’t know what to do.”

The accident occurred around 10:30 p.m. Lianhe Wanbao reported that the cyclist was dragged about 30 meters under the bus.

Rescuers from the Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) used lifting equipment to remove Mr. Gonzales and a paramedic pronounced him dead at the scene.

Marie told the Chinese-language Shin Min Daily News that the couple’s two children, aged eight and nine, have been crying non-stop since they learned of their father’s death.

“I don’t know what to do. He always uses his bike to get to work, so I don’t know where he was going that night,” she said.

Marie said her husband’s uncle will take care of the funeral arrangements and that her body will be flown back to the Philippines today.

Shin Min Daily News reported that Ms Marie had written a Facebook post dedicated to her husband.

“Let’s travel again, I’ll still be by your side. I hope this is all just a dream,” he said.

A Lianhe Wanbao reader, named only as 30-year-old Liao, told the newspaper that he was driving through the Loyang-Pasir Ris junction when he saw a bicycle crushed under a wheel on the bus.

“SCDF officers arrived two to three minutes later and used lifting equipment to move the front half of the bus up,” he said.

Liao said the bus passengers had already alighted and were subsequently picked up by another bus.

In response to inquiries, SBS Transit Senior Vice President of Corporate Communications Tammy Tan said: “We are sorry this happened. The bus was traveling in a straight line and was about to turn right at the traffic junction that was green in his favor when he had an accident.

“We are trying to get in touch with the rider’s closest relatives to extend our condolences and offer our help.”

He added that SBS Transit is assisting the police in their investigations.
