SINGAPORE: A Maserati driver who was banned from driving for life last year after dragging a traffic police officer down the road with his vehicle is now charged with dangerous driving while disqualified.
Lee Cheng Yan, 37, was out on bail pending appeal when the new crimes allegedly occurred in February and March this year.
Lee, who was in pretrial detention two days ago, appeared in court on Friday (March 19) via a Zoom call for a Superior Court hearing aimed at his appeal against the traffic police incident. However, it was postponed to a later date after he requested the performance of his attorney.

In July 2020, Lee received four years and seven months in jail, a fine of S $ 3,700 and was banned from driving for life for an incident in 2017, in which he defied a police officer’s instructions to stop and then He left with the officer hanging from the driver. door.
He dragged the officer for 124 meters and the victim fell and sustained knee, neck and back injuries.
In his defense at trial, Lee had claimed that a man named Kelvin who was similar in height and build and wearing a similar white shirt was behind the wheel that day.

10 NEW CHARGES FOR TRAFFIC-RELATED CRIMES
The prosecutor told the court on Friday that Lee received 10 new charges, including driving on Upper Boon Keng Road at around 2:30 p.m. on February 13 and driving on Ang Mo Kio Street 32 at 12:40 a.m. on March 4. .
He is accused of driving dangerously down Macpherson Road, towards Airport Road, in the early hours of March 12. The charge sheets indicate that he drove at about 140 km / h, over the limits of 50 km / h and 60 km / h in different sections and went through two red lights.
At approximately 4 a.m. that day, he allegedly also failed to comply with police instructions and drove a BMW through a police checkpoint set up along Macpherson Road.
Deputy Prosecutor Timotheus Koh told the court that Lee has been in pretrial detention since March 17, 2021.
After hearing the list of charges, Lee intervened to say, “I don’t do it.”
However, he was detained by the judge, who reminded him that he was in a court hearing and that he should behave accordingly.
Judge Aedit Abdullah said that Lee’s sister had written to the court to say that they wanted to change lawyers.
Lee was represented at the trial by Mr. Balamurugan Selvarajan, and his attorney on appeal was listed as Mr. Dhanwant Singh.
According to court records, Lee had been scheduled for trial next week on other pending charges. It is unclear if this will proceed as planned.
