Unhappy with his girlfriend, a man beat her and tied her to a chair on another occasion.

In another incident, Joshua Ng Weijie even threatened the 54-year-old with a samurai sword.

The 30-year-old Singaporean pleaded guilty on Tuesday (March 16) to one count of assault and criminal intimidation.

He also admitted to three other unrelated charges, including drug use and driving without a valid license.

Later, Ng was sentenced to three years and five months in jail, fined $ 2,100 and disqualified from driving all types of vehicles for a year.

The woman’s name has been removed from court documents and defense attorney SS Dhillon told the court on Tuesday that the couple are still together.

The court heard that, at the time of the crimes, Ng and his girlfriend were living together in a condo that she had rented.

Assistant District Attorney Daphne Jazreen Chee said the couple had been together since 2017.

But Ng turned abusive and assaulted his girlfriend in January and March of last year after they argued.

The DPP added that sometime in early April last year, Ng asked his girlfriend to loan $ 3,000 to a loan shark.

The woman did as she was told and reminded her to pay the loan back on time. Ng was angered when he heard this and punched him in the face, the court heard.

The couple had another fight around 3 a.m. on April 25 last year and Ng assaulted his girlfriend after she told him to go to sleep.

The DPP said: “Thereafter, the defendant left the dormitory briefly before returning with a samurai sword.

“Then he drew the sword in front of (the woman) and placed the blade of the sword against her left clavicle.”

The court heard that the woman alerted police around 5 p.m. that day and officers arrested Ng shortly thereafter.

They took her to the hospital where they found her with multiple bruises, including on her chest and right shin.

Furthermore, the court heard that Ng had used methamphetamine and was driving a car without a valid license last year.

For assault, a criminal can be imprisoned for up to two years and fined up to $ 5,000.
