SINGAPORE: A recall was issued for Satay’s instant spices after detected aflatoxin levels exceeded the maximum standards set out in Singapore’s food regulations.

The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has ordered the manufacturer, Li Kwong Agencies, to recall all batches of the implicated product. The retreat is in progress.

“Since the manufacturer also processes other peanut products, SFA is conducting more research and increasing controls on its products,” the agency said.

The affected products are Instant Satay Spices in packages of 50g and 500g with an expiration date of January 19, 2022.

Aflatoxins can appear in foods like peanuts as a result of fungal contamination before and after harvest. Aflatoxins are known to be genotoxic and carcinogenic, and exposure through food should be kept as low as possible, the SFA said.

“Consumers who have purchased the implicated product are advised not to consume it. Those who have consumed the implicated product and have health concerns should seek medical advice,” the SFA said.

“Consumers can contact their point of purchase for inquiries.”
