SINGAPORE – Singapore is discussing the possibility of an air travel bubble that will allow residents of Singapore and Australia to travel between the two countries without the need for quarantine, the Foreign Ministry said on Sunday (March 14).
The Republic is also currently in talks with Australia on mutual recognition of vaccination certificates and the resumption of priority travel for students and business travelers, he said.
Australia currently has a one-way “travel bubble” with New Zealand, allowing New Zealanders to visit without quarantine, although the scheme has been suspended multiple times in response to coronavirus outbreaks.
So far, Singapore has only one travel bubble, with Hong Kong. This has not yet gone into effect due to the increase in cases from Hong Kong last year.
The city state is looking to establish reciprocal travel bubbles with more countries, but this has not taken off so far.
Transport Minister Ong Ye Kung has said that these may become a reality in the second half of the year with places with low to moderate infection rates.
The MFA statement follows Australian media reports of a travel bubble between Singapore and Australia.
However, he noted that the two countries are not discussing the concept of a quarantine center or vaccination center.
Australian citizens can now transit through Singapore without quarantine to return home if they travel through approved transit routes.
