NEW DELHI: International Cricket Council (ICC) CEO Manu Sawhney was fired after an investigation by an independent auditing firm revealed adverse findings about his working style.
Sawhney, the former managing director of ESPN Star Sports, joined the Dubai-based world governing body in January 2019, succeeding South Africa’s David Richardson, who served as CEO for seven years.
An ICC spokesperson confirmed to Reuters that Sawhney had not come to the office and that a process had been initiated to address the matter.
Sawhney’s name was missing from the governing body’s statement on Wednesday (March 10) confirming the change of venue for the World Test Championship. Instead, the ICC quoted Geoff Allardice, Cricket’s general manager, in its statement.
The internal investigation was carried out in February and an anonymous survey revealed problems with his working style, the media said.
The former Singapore Sports Hub CEO was with Singapore-based ESPN Star Sports for 17 years and during his tenure he led the global broadcast partnership agreement with the ICC that ran from 2007 to 2015.

In 2017, Sawhney, then the CEO of Singapore Sports Hub, resigned after two years on the job.
A complaint letter about him was reportedly sent to partners at InfraRed Capital, an equity partner of Sports Hub Pte Lte, which manages the Singapore Sports Hub.
Sources told TODAY newspaper that the complaint contained allegations about Sawhney’s treatment of staff. Former employees also told the publication that Sawhney was demanding, vocal and occasionally volatile, with some pointing out that they had witnessed his heated discussions with colleagues.
A spokesperson later issued a statement saying he was on leave. Sports Hub conducted an internal investigation but decided that no action was warranted.
Sawney resigned in May 2017. He later called the allegations in the complaint “false and malicious.”
