SINGAPORE – A 30-year-old elevator technician died on Saturday (February 27) after being trapped in an elevator shaft in a building on North Bridge Road while performing repair work.
The Singapore Civil Defense Force (SCDF) and police told The Straits Times that they were alerted to the incident at 452 North Bridge Road, the address of the Chan Brothers building, around 11:30 a.m. M.
The elevator technician found himself trapped in a narrow space between an elevator car that was between the second and third floors of the building and the metal supporting structure of the elevator.
Getting the lift technician out took about six hours, in what the SCDF said was a very complex and delicate operation.
SCDF elite Disaster Rescue and Assistance Team officers and other fire station personnel were required to operate a large number of rescue teams within the confined space of the elevator shaft.
In addition to the SCDF emergency medical team, an emergency medical team from Tan Tock Seng Hospital (TTSH) was also on site to provide medical assistance.
The lifting technician was pronounced dead at the scene around 5.30pm by the TTSH team.
Police investigations into the unnatural death are ongoing.
