1 dorm resident among 4 new COVID-19 infections in Singapore

SINGAPORE: A one-bedroom resident working as a delivery assistant was one of four new COVID-19 cases reported in Singapore on Tuesday (February 23).

This is the first COVID-19 case to reside in a bedroom in nearly two weeks; the last such case was reported on February 10.

The dorm resident is the only locally transmitted COVID-19 case reported on Tuesday. The remaining three cases were imported and placed on a stay-at-home notice upon arrival in Singapore.

The locally transmitted case is a 35-year-old Bangladeshi man who works as a delivery assistant at Chng Woodworking and resides in a dormitory located on Kranji Way.

His job is to load and unload goods, and he does not interact with customers, said the Ministry of Health (MINSA).

It was detected when their joint COVID-19 test taken on February 21, as part of the routine tests listed, came back positive. An individual swab was performed on February 22, and the man began to develop a sore throat and cough the same day.

He was confirmed to have COVID-19 on February 22 and was taken to the National Center for Infectious Diseases in an ambulance.

“His previous tests of (listed routine tests), the last was on February 7, were negative for COVID-19 infection,” the Health Ministry said. “The result of his serological test has been negative, which indicates that it is likely that it is a current infection.”

Epidemiological investigations are ongoing.

Meanwhile, all identified close contacts of the case, including contacts from his bedroom and workplace, have been isolated and quarantined. They will be analyzed at the beginning and end of your quarantine period.

“We will also conduct serological tests for close contacts to determine if the case could have been infected by them,” the Health Ministry said.

FOREIGN DOMESTIC WORKER BETWEEN IMPORTED CASES

The remaining three cases were imported infections and had been placed on admission notice upon arrival in Singapore, the Health Ministry said.

One of the imported cases is a work permit holder who came from the Philippines and is a foreign domestic worker.

Another is a holder of a work pass that came from the United Arab Emirates and the United Kingdom. The remaining imported case is a short-term visiting pass holder who arrived from India to visit his family members who are permanent residents.

No new infections were reported in the community.

Seven more cases discharged

Another seven cases have been discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities, bringing Singapore’s total recoveries to 59,753.

There are 19 COVID-19 patients still in the hospital. Most of them are stable or improving, and one person is in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

A total of 82 patients are isolated and cared for in community facilities. These are people who have mild symptoms or are clinically well, but still test positive for COVID-19.

The only community case on Monday is a 43-year-old Singaporean who is the husband of a previous case, a 41-year-old Singaporean flight attendant from Singapore Airlines.

He was identified as a close contact of his wife and was quarantined on February 9. His swab taken the same day was negative for COVID-19.

The man developed a fever and loss of smell during quarantine but self-medicated and did not report his symptoms, the Health Ministry said. He was tested for COVID-19 on February 21 as part of the Health Ministry’s protocol to screen people during quarantine, and the test came back positive.

“People who are quarantined or staying at home should report any symptoms promptly and report their health status to the Ministry of Health every day,” the Ministry of Health said.

As of Tuesday, Singapore has reported a total of 59,883 cases of COVID-19 and 29 deaths from the disease.
