Striker says he agreed to Liverpool transfer ahead of Origi’s heroic CL

Liverpool avoided signing Max Kruse at the last minute in 2019 due to the exploits of Divock Origi in the Champions League.

That’s the verdict of Kruse himself, who became available in the summer of 2019 for free after his contract with Werder Bremen ended.

At the time RTL Journalist Thomas Wagner claimed that Kruse himself had vetoed the move to Anfield.

Wagner said: “I know Liverpool made him an offer.

“At first, I thought a change to Fenerbahce was unlikely. But he chose Fenerbahce over Liverpool ”.

However, it is not clear that Liverpool was the one that disconnected the signing due to the form of Divock Origi.

The Belgian forward scored two goals in a brilliant 4-0 comeback against Barcelona in the semi-final before bagging one in the final victory over Tottenham.

Those goals were enough to win Origi a new contract with Liverpool. The 25-year-old had entered the last 12 months of his contract with Anfield, but was offered a new long-term contract which he signed leaving Liverpool to choose not to pursue Kruse.

“Of course, I would have. In my opinion, it was relatively fixed. [Liverpool] actually wanted to give up two forwards, “he said in the Winner of the day: The Kickbase Podcast.

“Then one of the forwards scored goals in the semi-final and the Champions League final. Then it’s over. At the time it was disappointing. “

Kruse, who had scored 11 goals for the Bundesliga side, ended up moving to Turkish Fenerbahce.

The 32-year-old scored seven goals in 23 games, but returned to Germany with Union Berlin 12 months later.

Carragher: Origi is not good enough

Meanwhile, Origi scored six goals in 42 appearances last season en route to the Premier League title.

Origi has scored just once in 15 appearances this season and Jamie Carragher doesn’t think the forward is the right caliber for champions.

He told the Super six podcast: “If you look at Liverpool’s attacking players, they don’t have a forward. Jota is not a forward, the same with Mane, the same with Salah.

“They have Divock Origi but he is not good enough. And most of the time he plays wide, because he can’t play as a center forward.

“Liverpool definitely need to bring in a scorer,” added Carragher. “I don’t know exactly for what position, if he is a center forward or a midfielder.”
