SINGAPORE – A 72-year-old Singaporean man who received his first dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine was hospitalized on Tuesday (February 16) after suffering cardiac arrest.
The Ministry of Health (MINSA) said that the patient has been admitted to the intensive care unit of Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
“Based on the initial assessment of the Tan Tock Seng Hospital, there is no indication that the cardiac arrest is due to Covid-19 vaccination,” the Health Ministry said Thursday.
A medical team is conducting further tests to establish the cause of the man’s cardiac arrest.
The patient has a medical history of cancer, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia.
They vaccinated him Tuesday morning and took him to the hospital at night.
The Health Ministry said that trained health personnel had assessed that the patient was suitable for Covid-19 vaccination.
According to ministry protocols, the man was under observation at the scene for about 30 minutes after vaccination and was doing well.
“It is important to vaccinate and protect our older adults, as they are the most vulnerable to serious illnesses and complications from Covid-19 infection,” the Ministry of Health said.
The World Health Organization has found no evidence that the Pfizer-BioNTech vaccine contributes to an increased risk of death in older people.
