Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams criticized the club’s decision-making in the transfer market by naming three players who did not need to sign.
Martin Odegaard made his first outing for Arsenal in their 4-2 win over Leeds United on Sunday. But Adams isn’t convinced he was the right move.
The former defender also questioned the signings of Willian in the summer of 2020 and Nicolas Pepe a year earlier.
The two attackers have fought this seasonWillian has yet to score for Arsenal. Pepe, for his part, has only started eight Premier League games this season.
His ineffectiveness was one of the reasons Arsenal signed another attacking player at Odegaard in January.
However, Adams believes that the loan sum was another example of how the club ignored its real problems.
“To be honest, there is an argument that you don’t need Martin Odegaard,” he said. Premier League Productions after the Leeds game.
“It bothered me so much that we bought Pepe and Willian when you have two children [Emile Smith Rowe and Bukayo Saka] breaking into the team.
“There are other areas on the team that you could see; there are holes in that team, we saw how fragile they are defensively. Defense has always been the weak link.
“As Arsenal’s sporting director, you would not be adding Odegaard. Instead, you would be adding good, strong defenders to the team.”

Arteta qualifies Odegaard in full debut
Odegaard was not particularly involved in any of Arsenal’s four goals, but manager Mikel Arteta was pleased with the Norwegian’s performance.
The Real Madrid midfielder lasted 78 minutes, with 43 touches of the ball. He completed two dribbles and had two shots.
It was the intensity of his game that stood out for Arteta.
“Playing in his league start against Leeds, running the way he did, the way he felt comfortable,” Arteta said. Sky sports. “He was cool.”
