SUNRISE, Florida: Two FBI agents were killed and three others injured during a morning raid on a Sunrise, Florida home while executing a court-ordered search warrant, the FBI said Tuesday (February 2).

Authorities said they were complying with a court order in a child exploitation case. The suspect appeared to be contained within an apartment complex unit, surrounded by law enforcement officers.

A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that several FBI agents were shot while carrying out the warrant and that the extent of their injuries was not immediately known. The official was unable to publicly discuss an ongoing investigation and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Acting Attorney General Monty Wilkinson was briefed on the shooting and was closely monitoring the situation Tuesday, a Justice Department spokesman said.

The shooting erupted with about four shots around 6 a.m., said Julius McLymont, whose home borders the Water Terrace apartment complex.

“Boom boom boom boom,” he said.

He thought it was a backfired car, but about two minutes later he heard another volley of about five shots. He got out and looked over the fence as police cars and ambulances rushed in. He then saw officers working on someone lying on the ground, who was then loaded into an ambulance.

A SWAT team appeared next, with officers in riot gear. Then they went around the building shouting “go, go, go.”

McLymont said he couldn’t see the apartment where the shooting occurred from his location.

Authorities did not immediately release any information about the suspect, who reportedly remained inside the home, surrounded by officers.

Another large contingent of officers gathered outside a Fort Lauderdale hospital where the victims were transferred, according to a television video.

The Sunrise Police Department tweeted about the heavy police presence and surrounding road closures.

The shooting occurred in Water Terrace, a multi-unit housing complex. Hours later, Sunrise police urged residents to stay indoors and be patient as police blocked entrances to their community.
