SINGAPORE – A 36-year-old permanent resident preparing to depart for India was one of the Covid-19 cases reported in Singapore on Sunday (January 31).
The Ministry of Health (MOH) said the man had returned from a trip to India on December 19 last year and delivered his stay-at-home notice at a dedicated facility until January 2.
He had tested negative for Covid-19 on December 31 and showed no symptoms.
His infection was only revealed on Saturday from a pre-departure test he took in preparation for another trip to India, the Health Ministry said.
The tests showed that the man had a low viral load and a serological test result was also positive.
The Health Ministry added: “Since these indicate a probable past infection, we have classified the case as imported based on its travel history.
“It is likely that it is removing tiny bits of RNA from the virus, which are no longer communicable or infectious to others.”
A total of 29 new Covid-19 cases were confirmed on Sunday, bringing Singapore’s total to 59,536.
All cases were imported cases, none in the community or in workers’ bedrooms.
The imported cases had come from countries such as India, the United Kingdom and Nigeria.
There were 13 work permit holders who came from Bangladesh, India, Indonesia and Myanmar. Of these, six are foreign domestic workers.
All imported cases have already been placed on the stay-at-home notice upon arrival and tested while the notice was being delivered. None of them presented symptoms.
The number of new cases in the community has dropped to three cases last week, compared with 15 cases the previous week.
Meanwhile, the number of unrelated cases in the community has also decreased from three cases in the previous week to two cases in the last week.
“We will continue to closely monitor these numbers, as well as the cases detected through our surveillance program,” added the Ministry of Health.
With 32 cases discharged on Sunday, 59,213 patients have made a full recovery from the disease. A total of 44 patients remain hospitalized and none remain in the intensive care unit.
Worldwide, more than 100 million people have been infected with Covid-19 and more than two million deaths have been recorded.
