SINGAPORE (THE NEW PAPER) – The family of a self-employed balloon sculptor who died after being hit by a truck near her Jurong home two weeks ago received a torrent of condolences after news broke of her tragic accident.

Among those who paid tribute to Or Cheng Khim, 52, was Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong.

Ms. Or’s younger sister, Ms. Samantha Or, 42, told The New Paper that her father was shocked when he opened the letter addressed to him last Tuesday (January 18).

In the letter, Prime Minister Lee offered his condolences and recalled how he had met the late Ms Or twice when she helped build balloon walls for private events in 2018 and 2019, the young Ms Or said.

PM Lee also acknowledged the family’s decision to donate their organs.

“My father was happy that his daughter was recognized by the prime minister,” added the executive defense officer of the Singapore Armed Forces.

TNP reported last week that the late Ms Or, who was also a child care teacher, had been on her way home to surprise her son with sushi when the accident occurred.

Her 17-year-old son Ng Song Ching said the family had agreed to donate his mother’s organs because it was what she would have wanted.

According to the Chinese-language newspaper Shin Min Daily News, Prime Minister Tharman Shanmugaratnam visited the wake to offer his condolences to the family.

Mr. Shanmugaratnam, the Member of Parliament representing the area where the late Ms. Or lived, also offered his assistance to the family, including contacting the principal of his 15-year-old daughter’s high school.

Samantha Or, who said the president of the executive condo resident network her sister lived in had reached out to offer help, added that her family is grateful for the support provided.

She said: “We are touched that Singaporeans remember my sister.

“Not just as someone who suffered a tragic accident, but as the kind and helpful person that he was.”
