SINGAPORE: When told by a security guard to enter Jurong Point from another entrance due to COVID-19 measures, a man broke through the safe distance barricades at the mall and caused an uproar inside.

When the guard tried to take him away, the man struggled and hit the guard in the face.

Parma Nadam R Ammayappan, 68, received four weeks in jail and a fine of S $ 1,500 on Wednesday (January 20) for his crimes.

He pleaded guilty to three counts of willfully causing harm, disorderly conduct and absconding, with a fourth count considered in sentencing.

Parma was at Jurong Point around 1pm on September 24 of last year. He told a security officer and his supervisor that he wanted to go to the third floor of the mall.

The security supervisor told Parma to enter through another entrance to the mall, as the entrance they were in was blocked due to safe distancing measures from COVID-19.

Parma ignored this and broke through the safe distance barricades, with the two guards following him and warning him not to cause any more trouble.

Parma went up to the third floor before going to a restaurant in the basement where he yelled and asked diners for food and money.

A restaurant employee sought the help of security personnel and they tried to talk to Prabu and take him to the Fire Command Center. The security supervisor grabbed Parma’s arm to point him there, but Parma struggled and punched him on the cheek.

Parma was eventually arrested and released on bail, but on the run for 87 days. He was not represented in court and said he was left alone and “depressed and oppressed” with no one to care for him.

For willfully causing harm, he could have been imprisoned for up to two years, fined up to S $ 5,000, or both.
