SINGAPORE – 42 new coronavirus cases were confirmed at noon on Sunday (January 10), bringing Singapore’s total to 58,907.

All were imported cases that had been placed on a stay-at-home notice or isolated upon arrival in Singapore, the Ministry of Health (MINSA) said.

This is the highest number of imported infections since March 28 of last year, when there were also 42 such cases.

There were no cases in the community or in the workers’ bedrooms.

More details will be announced Sunday night.

On Saturday night, the Health Ministry announced that a total of 234 employees working at Crowne Plaza Changi Airport had tested negative for Covid-19.

The ministry announced a special test operation for all hotel staff last Thursday after two unrelated cases were found between them. A third confirmed case emerged the next day.

He closed the hotel from Friday to January 21 as a precaution.

The three cases were a 20-year-old Singaporean, a 24-year-old Korean citizen and a 43-year-old Malaysian woman.

The Singaporean had tested positive for the most infectious British strain of Covid-19 and his case was pending further confirmatory testing last Friday.

The three hotel workers had delivered packaged meals to the aircrew and hotel guests.

“From our preliminary investigations, we cannot exclude that the transmissions may have occurred at the hotel,” the Health Ministry said in Saturday’s press release.

On Saturday night, the Ministry of Health also confirmed 29 new cases of Covid-19, all of which were imported.

Among them were four Singaporeans, one of whom is a 71-year-old man who returned from India and was asymptomatic. The other three came from Sweden and Great Britain.

There were also three dependent pass holders who came from the United Arab Emirates, India and the Maldives.

Also among the imported cases was a special pass holder who is a member of the sea crew. It arrived from Indonesia on board a ship and was cleaned on arrival. They took him to the hospital when his test result came back positive for Covid-19 infection.

Meanwhile, the Sri Aachi Aappakadai Indian restaurant in Little India was added to the list of places visited by Covid-19 patients while they were still infected, the Health Ministry said.

With 31 cases discharged on Saturday, 58,596 patients have made a full recovery from the disease.

A total of 67 patients remain in the hospital, including one in the intensive care unit, while 158 recover in community facilities. Singapore has had 29 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died from other causes.

Globally, the virus outbreak, which began in December 2019, has infected more than 88 million people. More than 1.89 million people have died.
