SINGAPORE – 24 new cases of coronavirus have been confirmed as of noon on Monday (January 4), bringing Singapore’s total to 58,721.

They were all imported cases and are now serving admission notices or in isolation after their arrival in Singapore.

The cases include one Singaporean and 15 foreign domestic workers, the Ministry of Health (MINSA) said.

There were no new cases in the community or within workers’ bedrooms.

More details will be announced Monday night.

On Sunday, 35 new imported cases of Covid-19 were confirmed in Singapore.

It was the highest daily figure since September 14, when there were 48 cases. The highest number of imported cases before this was on March 28, when there were 42 such cases.

In announcing the numbers, the Health Ministry said that all infected people announced on Sunday had received stay-at-home notices or were in isolation when tested.

One of the new cases on Sunday is a cargo pilot who arrived from the United States via Australia. He was sent directly to the National Center for Infectious Diseases (NCID), where he was tested and confirmed to have Covid-19.

His serological test result was also positive.

Another case was a ship crew member who boarded a ship in Indonesia in March last year.

On December 23, he had a fever, but he self-medicated. He was later quarantined aboard the ship on December 31, as he had been identified as a close contact from a previously reported case, another crew member on the same ship.

The sailor did not disclose his symptoms until a teleconsultation with a doctor on Saturday. He was then taken to the NCID, where he tested positive for Covid-19.

The Health Ministry said the man never disembarked from the vessel and that all the remaining crew members were quarantined.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community increased from one case in the week before to the last to 10 cases last week.

The number of unrelated cases in the community also increased from one case in the previous week to four last week.

A total of 64 patients remained in the hospital on Sunday, while 117 recovered in community facilities. A patient is in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

Eleven more people were discharged yesterday, bringing the total number of discharged here to 58,472.

Twenty-nine people died from the virus here, while another 15 who had Covid-19 died from other complications.
