SINGAPORE – 35 new coronavirus cases were confirmed as of noon on Sunday (January 3), bringing Singapore’s total to 58,697.
These were all imported cases and had been placed on stay-at-home or isolated notices upon arrival in Singapore, the Ministry of Health (MINSA) said.
Six are Singaporean or permanent residents and seven are foreign domestic workers.
Sunday’s figure is the highest daily figure since Sept. 14, when there were 48 cases. This was also the highest number of imported cases since March 28, when there were 42.
More details will be announced Sunday night.
On Saturday, police said a group of 44 people who had gathered at an industrial building on Boon Lay Way is being investigated.
Of those 44 people, 41 are Singaporean, one is a permanent resident of Singapore, one is Malaysian and one is a Chinese citizen. They were drinking, smoking and singing in an empty office after 1 a.m. on New Year’s Day.
They are being investigated for non-compliance with safe distancing measures under the Covid-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) Regulation of 2020.
Police said they received a report about the meeting at 1:20 a.m. Friday and found a large group of 29 men and 15 women, ages 17 to 34, when they arrived at the scene.
They added that preliminary investigations had found that the people allegedly gathered to socialize and the venue was not licensed to provide public entertainment.
Police are investigating the incident.
Under the Public Entertainment Act, the crime of providing public entertainment without a valid license carries a fine of up to $ 20,000.
For failing to comply with safe distancing measures under Covid-19 rules, violators can be jailed for up to six months, fined up to $ 10,000, or both.
“The public is advised to take the prevailing safe distancing measures seriously,” police said.
Separately, the Ministry of Health confirmed 33 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, all imported. Two were symptomatic and the rest asymptomatic. All had been listed on stay-at-home or isolated notices upon arrival in Singapore.
Among the 33 new cases on Saturday was a three-year-old girl from India with a dependent pass and nine foreign domestic workers.
There was also a short-term visitor pass holder who came from Indonesia to visit her Singaporean father.
There were no new community cases and none of the workers’ bedrooms.
Overall, the number of new cases in the community has increased from one case in the previous week to 10 cases in the last week.
The number of unrelated cases in the community has also increased from one case in the previous week to four cases in the last week.
A total of 61 patients remained in the hospital yesterday, while 96 recovered in community facilities. One patient was in critical condition in the intensive care unit.
Seventeen patients were discharged.
Singapore has had 29 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died from other causes.
Globally, the virus outbreak that began in December 2019 has infected more than 82.7 million people. More than 1.8 million people have died.
