SINGAPORE: Police are investigating 44 people for allegedly violating COVID-19 safe distancing measures after they were found gathered in an industrial building along Boon Lay Way on New Years Day.
In a press release on Saturday (January 2), police said they received a report about the meeting around 1.20 a.m. on January 1.
“When police officers arrived, they found a large group of 29 men and 15 women, ages 17 to 34, drinking, smoking and singing in an empty office,” Singapore Police said.
He added that the 44 people comprise 41 Singaporeans, a permanent resident, a Malaysian and a Chinese national.
“Preliminary investigations revealed that the 44 people had supposedly gathered to socialize and that the venue is not licensed to provide public entertainment,” police said, adding that investigations are ongoing.
For disobeying safe distancing measures under the 2020 COVID-19 (Temporary Measures) (Control Order) regulations, violators can be jailed for up to six months, fined up to S $ 10,000, or both.
Under the Public Entertainment Act, the crime of providing public entertainment without a valid license carries a fine of up to S $ 20,000.
