A total of 75 men, ages 16 to 54, have been arrested for suspected members of illegal societies during police operations across the island from December 24-30.

In a statement on Wednesday (December 30), police said they have stepped up enforcement operations to deter gang activities that threaten public safety.

“Proactive controls were carried out at various critical points in the congregation, including food and beverage outlets and shopping centers, to suppress the activities of the secret society,” they added.

“Police will continue to monitor the situation and conduct enforcement operations across the island to take action against gang activities that threaten public safety.”

Police investigations are ongoing.

Anyone found guilty of being a member of an illegal society can face a fine of up to $ 5,000 and / or a jail term of up to three years.

“The police have zero tolerance for the activities of the secret society and will not hesitate to take strong measures, in accordance with the law, against those who choose to associate with gangs,” they added in the statement.

“This includes invoking the Criminal Law (Temporary Provisions) Law that provides for the detention without trial of any person involved in the secret society and criminal activities that threaten public safety, peace and good order.

“Members of the public are advised to stay away from secret society activities and to immediately report those who engage in such illegal activities to the police.”
