SINGAPORE: The support period for contracts related to events and tourism has been extended even further, from Thursday (December 31) to January 31, 2021.
In a press release on Thursday, the Ministry of Law (MinLaw) said that the one-month extension “will allow both individuals and businesses to re-evaluate the COVID-19 situation and re-evaluate their events or tours in light of the Phase 3 “.
Notices of repair of such contracts must be delivered before January 31, 2021.
The events and tourism sectors are some of the hardest hit by the COVID-19 pandemic and the latest extension of the support period for such contracts was announced in October.
“With Phase 3, there will be more scope to make alternative arrangements and adjustments to the terms of the original contract,” MinLaw said Thursday.
“For example, the parties to a large wedding contract may agree to hold the event on the contracted date, but on a smaller scale at an appropriately reduced price. This would be a fair outcome.”

If the contracted event cannot continue due to COVID-19, the parties are “strongly encouraged” to negotiate the matter, the ministry said, adding that they should only request redress under the COVID-19 Act (Temporary Measures). if they can’t reach an agreement.
If an agreement cannot be reached, either party may file a request for an Assessor’s Determination up to two months after the end of the relief period, before March 31, 2021.
“In appropriate cases, the Assessors may require the parties to attend mediation or to explain why an alternative arrangement is not being considered (eg, a smaller scale event or a rescheduled event),” MinLaw said.
The relief periods for the other scheduled contracts remain unchanged.
