Premier League Discusses Two Week Off Season Due To Coronavirus Outbreaks

The Premier League could see the introduction of a two-week hiatus due to the Covid-19 outbreaks, according to the Telegraph.

In January, the season could be halted for fifteen days after Premier League coronavirus testing found 18 people with the virus, the highest number in a single round since testing began in August.

On Monday night, Manchester City’s trip to Everton was postponed due to players testing positive before kick-off. Meanwhile, Sheffield United also experienced an outbreak, but will play its match against Burnley on Tuesday and Southampton manager Ralph Hassenhuttl will miss his team’s game with West Ham after a member of his family tested positive.

In a club statement prior to their match with Burnley, the Blades wrote: “Sheffield United can confirm that the club recorded a series of positive tests for coronavirus after the latest round of testing,” the club said in a statement. “Due to medical confidentiality, the club will not reveal the names of those affected.

“Individuals who have tested positive have now entered a period of self-isolation in accordance with the Premier League and Government guidelines. Everyone at Sheffield United would like to extend our best wishes to our colleagues and wish them a speedy recovery.”

According to the report, “high-level presidents have held informal talks” with some calling a mid-season break “inevitable” as a new variant of the virus spreads across the UK.

There are fears about the FA Cup Third Round, which will take place during the first weekend of January and many lower league clubs have their matches postponed due to the virus.
