SINGAPORE – Police had to disperse a crowd that gathered outside a uniform shop in Ang Mo Kio on Tuesday morning (December 29), many of whom were there to buy school uniforms for their children before they classes start next week.
Many parents had arrived at the Jeep Sing Fashion store around 8 a.m., two hours before it opened, to purchase a queue ticket.
At around 10 a.m., more than 100 people had formed a meandering queue to enter the store located in Block 4012, Ang Mo Kio Ave 10, with some ignoring the one meter safe distance requirement.
Then six police officers were seen outside the uniform store urging parents to stay further away and encouraging some to leave.
About 70 people who had tickets in line stayed in line.
On its website, the store advised customers not to show up as all the queue tickets for the day had been issued.
Shio Kumar, 46, who works in the marine industry, waited two hours before finally gifting his three-year-old daughter her kindergarten uniform.
Schools reopen on January 4.
He had waited in line for three hours on Monday, but was told to come back another day due to the size of the crowd.
Sharon Yee, 33, was unable to get a ticket for the queue to buy uniforms for her son, who will start high school, even though he was in the store at 8:30 a.m.
“My son cannot wear his primary school uniform, during the first days of secondary school, because it has become too small.
“He may feel ashamed of not having a uniform when his friends have theirs,” the official said.
He left the store without getting the uniforms around 10am.
Jeep Sing Fashion declined to comment when contacted. The Straits Times has also contacted police for comment.
