SINGAPORE – A local contractor was fined $ 8,500 for an incident that resulted in water contamination at a private condominium near River Valley Road, the national water agency PUB said on Monday (December 28).

Everrise Maintenance was convicted on December 1 of failing to ensure that regulated jobs were performed by a licensed plumber. It resulted in contamination of the water supplied by PUB to Waterford Residence on September 8.

PUB said that after receiving calls from residents about an odor in the water on September 9, it immediately dispatched officers to jointly investigate the incident with the condominium managing agent (MA).

“The odor goes back to one of the two compartments of the high-level water tank, which was immediately isolated for discharge work.

“The MA also carried out a complete washdown of the service pipes, which caused the interruption of the water supply to 60 residential units in the affected block for approximately three hours,” PUB said.

Everrise Maintenance was hired by MA to carry out the repair work after a crack approximately 10 cm long was found in the water tank cap of one of the condo’s high-level tanks.

Instead of hiring a licensed plumber, Everrise Maintenance told their workers to repair the crack line without proper instructions.

Workers applied sealant to both the outside and inside of the water tank lid, causing contamination of the water inside the tank.

Under the Public Utilities Law, those convicted of causing contamination to water supplied by PUB can be fined up to $ 50,000, while failure to ensure that regulated works are performed by a licensed plumber carries a maximum fine of $ 10,000 .

“We would like to remind all customers and building owners that regulated work on all water service facilities, including water storage tanks, must be performed by a licensed plumber,” said Ridzuan Ismail, director of supply for water (network) in PUB.

“Building owners are also responsible for the regular maintenance of the water service facilities, including the need to hire a licensed plumber to inspect and certify, at least once every 12 months, that the tanks are suitable and safe for the storage of drinking water and free from contamination or pollution, and to ensure that there are no leaks or the probability of leaks in the water service facilities ”, he added.
