SINGAPORE – The seating markings at the hawker centers here have been adjusted to signal the increase in maximum dining group size from five to eight on Monday (December 28), the first day of the third phase of reopening from Singapore.

The National Environment Agency (NEA) said in a statement that tables with eight seats or less will no longer have seating markings, while tables with more than eight seats will have some marked seats to ensure that dining groups have a maximum of eight people. .

“With phase three, the markings on the seats and tables in the dining areas of the street vending centers have been revised with simplicity and flexibility in mind to accommodate the increased size of the dining group from five to eight people.” said the NEA.

The agency added that the dining groups at the hawker centers will still have to stay within 1 meter of each other.

When adjacent tables are less than 1m apart, some seats may be marked to maintain a safe distance.

Safe distancing ambassadors will continue to be deployed at street vendor centers to ensure compliance with safe management measures, the NEA said.

Singapore moved into the long-awaited third phase of its reopening on Monday, more than eight months after the circuit breaker was introduced in April to quell the spread of Covid-19.

Groups of up to eight people can now meet socially, from a limit of five, and the capacity limit for independent shopping centers and large stores will be increased from 10 square meters per person to 8 square meters per person.

In addition to complying with safe handling measures, diners at street vendor centers should continue to place their trash in bins and return dishes and trays to designated collection points, the NEA said.

“This will help keep the dining room environment clean at our hawker centers and reduce the risk of disease transmission to other customers, cleaners and hawkers,” the agency said.

Markets

The NEA also said that starting next Monday, it will remove access control measures in seven markets here that were introduced to protect public health and to ensure that there was effective safe distancing in the markets.

The seven markets are:

1. Block 221A / B Boon Lay Place

2. Block 448 Clementi Avenue 3

3. Block 628 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 4

4. Block 58 New Upper Changi Road

5. Block 4A Eunos Crescent

6. Block 216 Bedok North Street 1

7. Block 630 Bedok Reservoir Road

These markets are added to another 20 to which these measures have been eliminated since April. Access control measures were initially implemented in 40 saturated markets.

Under such measures, members of the public cannot enter once the number of customers in each market reaches the stipulated allowable capacity.

The NEA said that 13 markets will continue to have access control measures as they have been observed to still have long lines.

“NEA seeks to make members of the public and merchants understand that a calibrated approach is necessary to strike a balance between resuming business in the markets and safeguarding the safety and well-being of all customers and merchants,” the agency said.
