SINGAPORE – Five new coronavirus cases were confirmed on Sunday (December 27), all of which were imported.

Among the five, a 23-year-old woman in possession of a work permit had submitted a stay-at-home notice at Mandarin Orchard Singapore before being transferred to another specialty facility on December 20.

That day, the Ministry of Health (MINSA) began investigations into 13 previously reported cases that had issued notices to stay at home at the hotel between October 22 and November 11.

The 13 cases, which came from 10 different countries, were infected by coronavirus strains with “high genetic similarity”, implying that the infections could have come from one source and could have occurred in the hotel.

The Malaysian woman, identified on Sunday night as Case 58,762, had a swab performed on December 19 and 21 and her test results were negative for Covid-19 infection.

Her December 24 swab at the end of her stay-at-home notice came back positive and she was taken to the hospital the next day.

A confirmatory test from the National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) also came back positive.

However, a second sample taken by NPHL on Saturday came back negative, and his serological test result also came back negative, the Health Ministry said.

The last test determines if the infection was old.

Investigations are underway to determine if it could be related to the 13 cases investigated by the Ministry of Health.

She was the third Covid-19 patient to test positive for the virus after serving part of an admission notice at Mandarin Orchard Singapore. The other two cases were announced on Friday and Saturday.

Among the other four cases imported on Sunday, one is a permanent resident. The 33-year-old man returned from Ukraine.

The remaining three are foreign domestic workers with work permits.

Among them were two Indonesians aged 37 and 38 and a Filipino woman aged 48.

All five patients had already received stay-at-home notices upon arrival in Singapore and were evaluated while their notices were being delivered.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community has remained low, with a total of one of those cases in the last week, currently unrelated.

With eight cases discharged on Sunday, 58,355 patients have made a full recovery from the disease.

A total of 31 patients remain in the hospital, none in intensive care, while 94 recover in community facilities.

Singapore has had 29 deaths from Covid-19 complications, while 15 who tested positive have died from other causes.

Globally, the virus outbreak, which began in December last year, has infected more than 80.3 million people. More than 1.75 million people have died.
