SINGAPORE – A man was sentenced Wednesday (December 23) to eight months in jail and two strokes of the baton for sexually abusing a friend at her home after a night out.
Earlier this month, the 30-year-old Singaporean pleaded guilty in district court to one count of sexual abuse.
During the sentencing, four other similar charges were considered. The man cannot be identified due to a gag order to protect the identity of the victim.
The court heard that the two were drinking with other friends around 9 p.m. on November 15 last year and left the bar around 1 a.m.
The 25-year-old woman invited the man and two other friends to hang out at her home in a Mount Vernon Road condo.
One of the friends left around 3 am while the other fell asleep on the living room couch.
The assailant asked the woman if she could stay overnight. They continued chatting in the living room when she agreed.
Deputy Prosecutor Daniel Ling had previously said: “The defendant and the victim talked about ‘spooning’, which is a sexual issue. After a while, both the victim and the defendant fell asleep on the floor of the courtroom.
“Some time later, the victim woke up and realized that the defendant was hugging her from behind.”
She left him to use the bathroom and fell asleep in her own bedroom, leaving the door open.
The man then got into his bed. The victim was surprised to find him resting next to her, the court heard.
Then he slipped his left hand into her top and abused her.
DPP Ling had told the court: “Scared and frightened, the victim took the opportunity to turn away from the accused and turn her back on him. The victim was disgusted and indignant.
“Soon after, the defendant’s alarm sounded, indicating that it was around 6:30 am. The defendant got up from the victim’s bed and left the (unit).”
The woman told her boyfriend, who was studying abroad at the time, about the incident, before alerting the police on November 21 last year.
The offender is now out on bail of $ 15,000 and will be surrendered on January 4 of next year to begin serving his sentence.
For sexual abuse, he could have been imprisoned for up to two years and fined or punished.
