SINGAPORE – Bacteria causing food poisoning have been detected in an Indonesian black pepper seed product, prompting the Singapore Food Agency (SFA) to order a recall of all affected products.

The presence of Bacillus cereus exceeded the microbiological standards set out in the Singapore Food Regulations during a routine sample of the product, SFA said on Tuesday (December 22).

The affected product is in bottles of 50 g and 90 g of Crab Brand black pepper seeds that expire on November 1, 2021 and October 1, 2021, respectively.

They were imported by Siem Trading, which was instructed to remove the affected bottles.

Eating food contaminated with the foodborne bacteria can lead to abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting.

It is typically found in soil, vegetation, and in the intestinal tract of insects and mammals.

Consumers who have purchased the product are advised not to consume it, SFA added.

Those who have ingested the product and have concerns about their health should seek medical advice.

Affected parties can contact their point of purchase for inquiries.
