Louis van Gaal has claimed that Donny van de Beek has left a serious career behind by joining Manchester United.

And the former United manager insists the 23-year-old Dutch international should never have left Ajax for Old Trafford knowing that Paul Pogba and Bruno Fernandes were blocking his path to glory.

Van de Beek’s £ 39m signing was greeted as a smart deal for the club and the player when he joined in September and the Dutchman is expected to become a regular.

The youngster was seen as one of Ajax’s crown jewels and a player who could bring a dash of quality to United’s midfield.

Donny van de Beek has struggled to start

But van de Beek has started only two of the nine Premier League games he has been involved in.

That led his agent to criticize United, and van Gaal believes he should not have joined United.

He said: “There are so many teams where Van de Beek would look better than at United. And those other teams I’m talking about are also at the top of Europe.

The Dutchman has often been found watching from the stands.

“I hope Van de Beek will come to his time at United, but in all honesty? No, you have not made the right decision.

“When you know that Fernandes and Pogba are there, you don’t go there …

“Those are the positions where Van de Beek is at his best. And Pogba doesn’t even play every week!

“Fernandes is more important than anyone, that’s why he’s always playing. And Van de Beek doesn’t have the same quality as Fernandes. ”
