French President Emmanuel Macron’s status ‘stable’ after contracting COVID-19

PARIS: The condition of French President Emmanuel Macron is stable and the results of a medical examination are reassuring, the French presidency said on Saturday (December 19) in an update on the president’s COVID-19 status.

“The president’s medical condition is stable compared to … on Friday. He has similar symptoms of COVID-19 that do not prevent him from meeting his obligations,” the presidency said in a statement.

Macron said Friday that he was fine a day after testing positive for COVID-19, but was working at a slower rate than usual outside of Paris.

He blamed his COVID-19 on a combination of negligence and bad luck, and urged his compatriots to stay safe while critics denounced mistakes in his behavior to prevent infections.

While Macron generally wears a mask and adheres to social distancing rules, and has insisted his strategy against the coronavirus is driven by science, the president has been caught on camera in recent days violating control guidelines for France virus.

Macron also hosted or participated in multiple large group meals in the days leading up to testing positive on Thursday, including with members of his centrist party and rival politicians, while the French are currently advised to avoid gatherings with more than six people.

His office has been contacting those present for meals, but he told some people seated away from the president that they were not considered at risk.
