LONDON: Mexican Sergio Pérez will replace Alexander Albon on the Red Bull Formula One team next season, media reported Thursday.

The Speedweek website, owned by Red Bull’s Media House, reported that Pérez had signed to replace the young Thai man alongside Max Verstappen and that the announcement would be made on Friday.

He said Albon would move into the role of reserve pilot and work on the simulator.

The Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf, which has close ties to Verstappen, reported the same.

There was no immediate comment from Red Bull.

Pérez, the winner of the race in Bahrain this month, lost his seat at Racing Point (Aston Martin) to four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel.

Albon has not been able to match Verstappen’s performances this season, with the Dutch driver winning two races and finishing third overall.

Pérez, 30, the first Mexican to win a grand prize in 50 years, finished fourth. He had indicated that he would take a sabbatical next year if he could not find another seat in F1.
