SINGAPORE – Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong on Friday (December 18) expressed his appreciation to migrant workers in Singapore for their trust, patience and support despite having gone through a difficult period since Singapore detected its first cases of Covid- 19 between them almost a year ago. .

It took a “tremendous effort” to reach the stabilized situation now, but migrant workers are now healthy and safe from the virus, Prime Minister Lee said in a video message on the occasion of International Migrants Day.

“We couldn’t have done this without your cooperation and sacrifices,” he said.

Prime Minister Lee assured migrant workers that they will be cared for as Singaporeans are cared for.

“You are welcome members of our society. If you get sick, we will make sure that you get medical care, stay in contact with your families and can return to work as soon as possible,” he said.

He noted that the rules in place to keep the spread of Covid-19 in check are gradually being relaxed in the dormitories of migrant workers and in the wider community.

In addition to being able to visit recreational centers, migrant workers can now also participate in communal activities such as cooking and sports, he said.

“Hopefully if the number of cases remains very low, we can alleviate even more. Stay alert and cooperate with the Government and your employers to keep everyone safe.

“On behalf of all Singaporeans, I thank you once again for all your contributions and support, and I wish you a very happy International Migrants Day.”

To mark the occasion, the Migrant Workers Center (MWC) of the National Trade Union Congress (NTUC) is organizing a series of activities and events from December 13 to 27.

The MWC said in a statement that its goal is to reach 20,000 workers through these celebrations to thank them for their contributions to Singapore.

Migrant workers can take part in a digital tour jointly organized by MWC and telecommunications company Singtel on the MWC Facebook page, featuring performances by celebrities from Bangladesh and India, as well as games with prizes to be won.

The MWC will also present its annual awards to 20 migrant worker “grassroots ambassadors” to recognize their efforts to go “the extra mile” to help their co-workers during the break in the loop.

Physical road shows, where Singtel will offer discounts and promotions, will also be held at the MWC Recreation Center on Soon Lee Road from Friday to Sunday for migrant workers with valid exit passes that allow them to leave their dormitories.

MWC said in its statement that it has spared no effort to help migrant workers during the pandemic.

“In 2020 alone, the MWC has reached more than 650,000 migrant workers, the most migrant workers assisted in a year,” he said.

It added that it has distributed more than five million essential items such as masks, hand sanitizers and soap to workers living in dormitories and temporary rooms, and has also provided nearly a million meals to some 10,000 workers living in dormitories converted into factories. .

The MWC said it also supported the deployment of 130 telemedicine kiosks in more than 120 dormitories and temporary accommodations to give migrant workers direct access to medical help and support.
