SINGAPORE: More than three-quarters of school candidates who took the N (A) -Level exams this year are eligible for High School 5, they said on Thursday (Dec. 17).

More than 13,400 students who took the 2020 Singapore-Cambridge N-Level exams collected their results on Thursday. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, arrangements were made for candidates from schools to receive their results in classrooms, rather than meeting as a cohort as in previous years.

Of the 9,321 candidates who took the N (A) exams, 99.7 percent received the GCE N (A) -Level certificate, compared to 99.5 percent in 2019, the MOE and SEAB said in a joint press release. .

This certificate is awarded to candidates who receive a grade 5 or better in at least one N (A) subject.

Among the school’s candidates who took N (A) -Levels, 77.7 percent were eligible to advance to Secondary 5. Last year, 76.6 percent of students who took the N (A) course were eligible for Secondary 5.

These students had aggregate scores that did not exceed 19 points for English, mathematics, and the top three subjects (ELMAB3), and at least a grade 5 for all subjects used in the ELMAB3 calculation.

About 43.2 percent of the N (A) school candidates also sat for subjects on the O-Level exams this year, the MOE and SEAB said in the press release.

“Schools will consider the results of the combined school-based N (A) -Level and O-Level preliminary exams when determining their eligibility for the 5 N (A) high school or post-secondary pathways,” said the Press release.

Of the 4,156 students who took the N (T) exams, 98.5 percent scored D or better in at least one subject and earned the GCE N (T) -Level certificate, compared to 98.1 percent in 2019.

DIRECT ENTRY SCHEME TO THE POLYTECHNICAL PROGRAM

High school 4 students who took the N (A) -Level exams and scored a raw ELMAB3 score of no more than 19 points can apply for the Polytechnic Program Direct Entry Scheme.

They must have achieved a grade 4 or better in both English and mathematics, and a minimum of grade 5 in three other subjects, excluding co-curricular activities. Those who want to enter business and service courses must have obtained a grade 3 or better in English.

CCA bonus points are not included in the ELMAB3 aggregate used to consider eligibility for the program, but are counted for publication.

Under the program, students will be prepared for progression to selected polytechnic diploma courses with a two-year Higher Nitec program at an Institute of Technical Education (ITE).

Those who successfully complete the Higher Nitec course with the minimum grade point average (GPA) are guaranteed a place in a polytechnic diploma course assigned to their Higher Nitec course.

About 1,200 places will be offered under the program at the three ITE universities, the MOE and SEAB said, and applications will open Thursday.

POLITÉCNICA FOUNDATION PROGRAM

High School 4 students who sat for the N (A) level exams can also apply for the Polytechnic Foundation Program. Those who have a raw ELMAB3 total of no more than 12 points and meet the specific requirements of the subject of the chosen course are eligible.

They must also have obtained a grade of Grade 3 or better in all subjects that make up their ELMAB3 aggregate. To enter Group 2 courses, such as accounting, business, hospitality and tourism management, and marketing, they must have obtained a grade 2 or better qualification in English.

CCA bonus points are not included in the ELMAB3 aggregate used to consider eligibility for the basic program, but are counted for publication.

The one-year core program at polytechnic schools offers a “practice-oriented curriculum” to prepare students for entry into the corresponding diploma courses. After completing the program, students will advance to their pre-selected diploma course, if they pass all modules of the core program.

Around 1,500 places will be offered in the polytechnic schools and applications will open in January 2021, when the O-Level results are published. Students who intend to apply for this core program must first progress to Secondary 5 in January.

All N (A) and N (T) course students who have completed their secondary education can also apply to continue their studies through ITE’s Nitec programs, the MOE and SEAB said.

“Schools can also laterally transfer students from Secondary 4 N (T) to Secondary 4 N (A) if they obtained an A grade in both English Language and Mathematics, and a B or better grade for another subject on the GCE N (T ) – Level test ”, said the press release.
