‘I’m over the moon’: Jordan Henderson salutes late win over Spurs

Jordan Henderson felt that Liverpool’s relentlessness against Tottenham Hotspur made the 2-1 win one of his best performances so far this season.

A gripping clash between the top two in the Premier League was resolved in the last minute at Anfield when Roberto Firmino drove in a header to secure three points that lifted the Reds above the Spurs on top.

Mohamed Salah’s deviant effort had previously been canceled by Son Heung-Min, but the reigning champions refused to budge and took the lead in the division as a result.

Henderson spoke to Amazon Prime Video after the game and you can read the captain’s take on the dramatic win below …

On being a ‘heavyweight’ clash and how it felt to play in …

Yes, I thought it was a good game, very tactical and probably what you expected a bit in terms of us dominating with the ball, we created opportunities and then [we] finish on the counter in the first half. We will be disappointed with that because we knew that was the case, but overall I thought the performance was outstanding. I thought we dominated for long periods with the ball, we created some good chances and never stopped, we went on to the end and got the winner that I think we deserved.

On whether he thought a winner would elude Liverpool …

We just focus on moving on until the whistle blows. We do not think about records or results, we are here to win games and we do not stop until the final whistle. Unfortunately we couldn’t find a winner over the weekend, today we did. So I’m delighted with the guys, I thought the performance was outstanding and deserved all three points.

On whether it was the Reds’ best performance of the season so far …

I’d say it was one of our best performances of the season, personally. With the ball, without the ball, the counter pressure was really good, recovering the ball high up, relentless with the pressure. I’m on the moon, as you can see.

On Rhys Williams’ display on his Premier League debut …

Well, I told them before the game that I was outstanding and I was expecting the same tonight and he was outstanding again. He was one of the best players in the park, he won most things in the air, he defended, I could hear him speak all the time, for such a young boy. Enchanted by him. But not only him, Fabinho next to him, the four in the back and the whole team, to be honest.

On overtaking Spurs to first place in the Premier League …

We just want to focus on ourselves, I know we keep saying this and it might get boring but we do, we focus on ourselves and yes it might give you a bit of a disappointment because we got all three points but it’s more about us and what . we make. We are delighted with the three points and now we have to focus on the weekend, which comes quickly against Palace, which is a very good team, as you know. They have had very good results lately, so it will be a difficult test for us.
